Labor of Love at Walnut Hills' Oldest Community Garden

The oldest community garden in Walnut Hills, and one of the first community gardens started by the Civic Garden Center, Walnut Hills Community Garden has been the recipient of much love and attention over the past month. Twenty eight of the thirty beds have been cleared and turned over, four beds have been planted, and more than half of the beds have been refilled with the best topsoil that Hafner's had available. Check out the before (left) and after (right) below! Expect to see peas soon, with their fragrant blossoms perfuming the sidewalks. All different kinds of lettuce, too, will soon be gracing the plates of those Walnut Hills residents who are interested in eating food produced as fresh and as locally as possible.

Thank you to the Civic Garden Center for supplying volunteers, thank you to CECO Environmental for not only providing sweat equity, but for actually renting a bed for their employees to enjoy! Thank you to Reigning Royalty, a chapter of the Cincinnati Federation of Colored Women's Clubs, for planting and bringing an Easter Egg Hunt to the garden. And last, but not least, thank you to Ohio Serves, for providing funding for Global Youth Services Day, which paid for the topsoil, tools, and lumber to repair some of the beds. For information on renting a bed at the Walnut Hills Community Garden, located at the corner of Beecher and Stanton, call or text Brenda Baker, garden volunteer, at (513) 706-9279.

Global Youth Service Day

Global Youth Service Day was celebrated by many teenagers in the neighborhood this year. Warm weather met us on East McMillan as we ventured out to replant flowers in the business district. Laughter and teamwork kept us going until we ended service with dinner at Gomez! Our Community Outreach Coordinator, Aprina will be leading this work for the next 5 months. If your interested in donating time and or resources please contact her at 513-704-5580!

Food Forest PopUp PickUp - Coming Soon!

We're partnering with Food Forest on a grocery pickup service in the neighborhood. Last month we tested the grocery ordering software and the distribution logistics for the Food Forest PopUp PickUp. Come to Area Council on May 9th to learn more about Food Forest and the PopUp PickUp launch! This pilot has been made possible by the generous support of The Carol Ann and Ralph V. Haile, Jr./U.S. Bank Foundation.
